It is generally good to get a medical opinion, but on the other hand if you took a kid to the doctor every time that they fell down you would be there every day!!!
Falls that don’t involve trauma to the head can usually be triaged by the parent. Obvious deformity or excessive swelling of arms and legs (indicating possible fracture) or significant pain that persists more than an hour or so post incident needs to be xrayed
Head trauma is always potentially more serious than injury to the extremities. If the impact is minor and the child does not experience unconsciousness, a change in behavior, unusual sleepiness or signs and symptoms of a headache -the parent can usually safely observe the child carefully for 24 hours post trauma. The parent should also use a flashlight every 2 to 4 hours to ensure that the pupils are equal, normal in size and reactivity.
Any head trauma of significant energy or any loss of consciousness, sleepiness, change in behavior, significant headache, pupillary changes, bleeding or fluid discharge from the ears should either be taken immediately to the ER or have an ambulance called. REMEMBER THAT ANY HEAD INJURY COULD ALSO HAVE NECK OR BACK INJURY ALSO. An injured child should not be carried willy nilly without proper neck and back precautions. To do so could lead to permanent paralysis.
